573	KINFAUNS Fergus Christopher Commane (The Much Honoured Lord Kinfauns, 26th baron) landowner of Newhall House and Estate, custodian of Killone Abbey and the Holy Well of St John the Baptist in County Clare, keeper of the Crown-granted hereditary office of admiralty of the Tay — an ancient honour granted to a predecessor. In 2024, he succeeded to the dignity of Lord Kinfauns, granted by King James III of Scots in 1487 and reaffirmed in 1608 by King James I of Ireland. The lordship of baronial rank carries a storied history, later merging with the prestigious Earldom of Moray, one of the original seven earldoms of Scotland, with traditions tracing an earlier creation for Sir Thomas Charteris, a knight who fought alongside Wallace and Bruce. In 2025, the family’s Gaelic lineage was formally recognised when Clan Commane was entered onto the Clans of Ireland Register under the patronage of the President of Ireland, affirming the family’s descent from the rí kings of the Déisi Munster and the historic Chiefdom of Tulach Commáin. As Taoiseach successor, he was consecrated by derbhfine under Brehon law, as Gaelic Clan Chief of Ó Comáin. His ancestors include Suibne mac Commán, king of Déisi Munster, and by tradition, the lineage claims earliest known descent from Ferchess mac Commán (anglicised as Fergus Commane), a warrior-seer of the High Kings’ court whose deeds are preserved in early Irish annals.
